Johannes Brahms (1833-1897): Clarinet Sonata Op.120, No.2 in E flat (1894) Allegro amabile - Allegro appassionato - Andante con moto; allegro Programme note Brahms composed both his Sonatas for Clarinet and Piano, Op. 120 in 1894 for Richard Mühlfeld, who performed them with the composer in January the following year. The second sonata contains only three movements, each possessing challenges for both players - Brahms's piano accompaniment is almost orchestral at times (the first sonata has in fact been orchestrated by Luciano Berio). The word 'lyrical' may have been invented to describe the first movement, Allegro amabile, though it is a passionate lyricism and uses the full colour pallette of both instruments. The second movement begins more energetically than the first, in the tonic minor before pivoting via Eb/D# to B major for the peaceful Sostenuto central section. The first theme returns unaltered, outlining a perfect ternary form. The final movement is a theme and variations of great rhythmic interest.
