Arnold Cooke (1906-2005): Sonata for Clarinet and Piano, 1959. Allegro moderato - Scherzando - Adagio ma non troppo - Molto vivace Programme note Arnold Cooke studied with Edward J. Dent and Paul Hindemith and, following war service, taught at the Trinity College of Music until 1978. The influence of Hindemith looms large in Cooke's music, and this sonata clearly echoes the elder composer's own clarinet sonata of 1939 harmonically, structurally and melodically . This said, Cooke's Sonata in B flat for Clarinet and Piano, composed in 1959 for the Hampton Music Club, is an individual work featuring many memorarable themes and motifs; the composer's handling of harmonic light and shade is particularly characteristic. Recording The sonata appears on a disc of British Music for Clarinet and Piano recorded by Thea King and Clifford Benson, also featuring clarinet works by Stanford, Finzi, Ferguson, Hurlstone, Howells, Bliss and Reizenstein.
