William Yeates Hurlstone (1876-1906): Four Characteristic Pieces for Clarinet and Piano Ballade (Moderato a piacere) - Croon Song (Andantino) - Intermezzo (Moderato grazioso) - Scherzo (Vivace, ma non troppo) Programme note Hurlstone studied composition at the Royal College of Music with Charles Villiers Stanford, but could have made a successful career as a concert pianist had he not been hampered by asthma, an affliction which led to his early death. Although it is not known when exactly the Four Characteristic Pieces were composed, it is believed they may have been written for the clarinettist George Clinton. The mood of the set is overwhelmingly cheerful, with rising phrases predominating in the main themes. Suggested Recordings Thea King and Clifford Benson's recording is available on a CD of British Music for Clarinet and Piano, also featuring works by Finzi, Stanford, Howells and Cooke. Another excellent recording is that by Victoria Soames and John Flinders on the Clarinet Classics label, a disc entitled The English Romantics. It also features works by Howells and Harford Lloyd. Sheet Music The Emerson edition (1978) can be purchased from Sheet Music Plus. Useful Weblinks Article on Hurlstone by Richard J.
