Robert Schumann (1810-1856): Fantasiestücke (also known as Soiréestücke) (1849) Programme Note The movements should be played without a break, but are of contrasting character; the first is reflective and sombre with a delicate, flowing melody; the second light and unassuming with a lilting middle section; and the last fast and fiery with dramatic bursts of energy. The movements are not named (unlike the composer's Fantasiestücke for piano); Schumann was trying to evoke moods rather than pictorial images. Each therefore makes different demands on the performer in terms of expression, sonority, and dexterity. Suggested recordings Try the 2CD set by Emma Johnson, featuring this work plus concertos by Mozart, Crusell and Malcolm Arnold, along with Finzi's Five Bagatelles and other chamber works. Full Price. Another good-value mid-price disc combines the Fantasiestücke with both of the Brahms sonatas and Debussy's Première Rhapsodie. Sheet Music Urtext Edition published by Henle. In their Soiréestücke guise, published by Faber.
